Now that this is in the senate, regardless of where you reside, let these folks know how you feel about horse slaughter. This matter of great importance will be heard by the Senate on March 12th at 3:00 p.m.
I sent the following and have attached all of the email addresses (should make it a bit easier)
Dear Senators of the great state of Montana,
I am writing as a concerned citizen of the United States and member of the Equine community. I strongly encourage you to vote for HB 418. The horse industry of Montana as well as the great state of Texas, need this bill to be put into effect.
I am sure that opponents of this legislation are bombarding you with the idea that all Equine are pets and lifelong companions, I would argue that for the vast majority of horse owners this is not the case.
Horse owners who have grown up with the animal, understand that preventing slaughter will induce cases of abandonment and abuse. It will also further legislation such as H.R 6598, that will prevent the transportation of Equine for the purpose of slaughter and further infringe upon our individual rights, regarding personal property. It is my opinion that, while well intentioned, the opponents of this bill are allowing emotion to blur reality. If this legislation is defeated the reality is, tens of thousands of American Equine will have been sentenced to a slow agonizing death. Take this quote for example:
"when state-imposed bans closed the last three U.S. horse slaughterhouses, a record 78,000 horses were exported to Canada and Mexico for slaughter, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture statistics compiled by the Humane Society of the United States"
Where did 78,000 horses come from?
Were they all pets and companions?
Who will pay for the care of these horses if they are forced to remain in the united states without the option of slaughter?
If you vote against this bill are YOU prepared to adopt a few of these horses?
Should we, the tax payer, be burdened with the cost of caring for them?
Should a person, down on their luck due to this economy, struggling to feed their family, have to watch their equine starve to death, when it could be a source of income?
I am asking each of you to consider your vote carefully, there is more at stake here than a slaughterhouse in Montana. There has to be an outlet in the United States for the humane disposal of Equine that have no other use.
If you support legislation that allows a mother to MURDER her unborn child, simply because it's not convenient, It would seem to me that you are morally obligated to cast your vote in support of HB 418.
