Default Colic #1 killer?

I've always known colic as being the #1 killer of horses and parasites the #1 cause of colic.
This title has now been taken over by RFDTV. My son had a show on with this idiot tying his horse's leg up and having it "run"(hop) around a round pen. He rotated all 4 legs.
Can you just envision the number of innocents that watch this show thinking they are watching god from Austrialia and bring and early in the morning will proceed to the barn with a rope and will the proceed to wrench poor old Dobbins leg off his body.
He should have stated Please have your Vet on speed dial because your going to need him. Probably a back hoe too.

I can one better you on that one. Happened to another local trainer, not us thank GOD.
Trainer was grooming horse and the horse's tail came off in his hand. So he calls the guy. Guy says "Well I figured it would eventually fall off".
The guy had gotten a training DVD where they tied the horses leg to its tail. Well he tied it to the tail bone, not under it. Horse started fighting the rope and got the rope so tight on the horses tail, after a couple of hours the guy finally gets the rope cut off of the horses tail. Horse now has a tail like a bob tailed dog.

That's HORRIBLE! If it were me I'd still be kicking my own _ss for trying out that advice. He should have sent that tail to the trainer on the DVD to warn him of the consequences of giving out incomplete advice, like not being more specific on placement of that rope on the tail. Poor horse, I feel so sorry for it not being able to swish the flies. As a complete novice at training, I can attest that there is so much information out there that it gets confusing. That's why I like Horseville and my Horseville friends. They help cut through the junk with good practical advice. If someone had suggested some flakey idea like that someone else would have chimed in with a reality check. Long live Horseville!

You are right !! Many on Horseville including me have 30+ yrs dealing with horses !! While everyone may not agree on methods, you would at least have enough good ideas to make an intelligent choice !! Some of those TV trainers have no idea the number of horses that they have all but ruined with their information !! Too many newbies just don`t know how to apply it !! Makes me wonder how there were so many great horses before they came along !!

Do people not have and use common sense any more? It just seems even a novice could see a problem with tying a horse's leg up.

4J-old barrel racer trick is tying the head around. But you use the tail hairs and bridle rein. You do not tie to the leg and you tie loosely, just enough for them to bend/flex. Works if done correctly.

Cinch, most of what I learned about horses was from a bunch of cutting horse trainers !! They said that the best "tool" to use when training a horse was common sense !! That trick of tying the head to the tail hair has been used forever !! It does work if you have a horse with a really stiff neck though I have never tried it !! Problem is most people over-do it or as in the case you are talking about, tie it wrong !!!

If we have a horse with a stiff neck or not wanting to flex, hubby is always tieing heads around with a snaffle bit or side pull but he ties to the back ring of the saddle. Nearly all of the horses he trains gets their head tied around at one point or another. He never ties one to the tail hairs. Most of the horses we do are western pleasure horses and you sure don't want any damage to a tail, not even a hair pulled out. We do our best to have long thick tails as hate to use a false tail on one. Several of the horses we have, have their tails up in tail bags or socks all of the time.
