Depends on how aggressive the new mom is !! For the first week or two the baby will take to the stealer if allowed together !! After the foal is 3 to 4 weeks old it is usually so bonded to the mother that stealing doesn`t happen easily !! Especially if the mother is a bit aggressive in defending the new baby !! I would keep them separated at least a month !! Of course there are always exceptions !! Best bet is just to watch after the month is over and see what happens !!

I have one myself and even seperated her from them for 2 months. When I let her back out, she stole her again. The mom is a very good mom and wont stand for the foal to get out of her site but she just acts like she dont mind having an extra babysitter..lol

I have 2 foals here and after they were about 2 months old the mothers delegated the youngest two herd members as babysitters !! You should see my paint gelding trying to corral two youngsters !! Drives him nuts !! But he keeps them safe and away from cattle guards and fences !! Herd dynamics always amaze me !!
