He is so lucky the day you came into his life. He will be a great boy. He is going to need a lot of exercise and only pen him when you have to. My neighbors have the sweetest beagle and keep him penned all the time. I would love to just steal him. He just wants love and attention. Two of my beagles dug a hole under the fence last night. I always worry they will get run over even though we a ways from the road. They came back this a.m. dragging their butts and smelling of "Pugh", skunk. I love his name, Copper. He will be your best buddy forever.

They actually make excellent house dogs even if big !! Just get him neutered and strayng shouldn`t be a problem,,,,but hunting will be !! Good thing is they always find their way home !! Unless some of the coon hunters snatch him !! He is a cutie !!!

He is so cute! I'm with Mart on getting him spayed ASAP. I have a coon dog and she comes in the house and is the only totally housebroken one I have. They are smart & don't mind getting their feet wet like my mini pins. I don't know if you live on a country road or busy road & how much acreage you have. I live out in the country and mine stays on my property. She just seems to know. Sex is the big thing that causes them to stray.
I would keep him close to start, in the house or pen. Take him for walks, especially around the perimeter of your property. Talk to him and show him you don't cross the line. After he's real sure where home is, experiment with a little time off the leash and see what he does. If you can't trust him then I'd invest in one of those electric underground/shock collar things. They do work and don't harm them. I hate to see hunting dogs tied up or in a pen all the time. I just think it's harder on them. I think those chain link pens are probably more expensive than the electric fence. Be sure to get one of those metal tags with your name and number on it in case he strays. I'm guessing he will pee and poop all around your property line when you take those walks with him. That will make it his own. My driveway is a little over 1/3 mi. long and Franny follows me to the to the end of the driveway and takes a poop right there by the road. That's for the benefit of the dogs across the road. She is marking HER territory. I turn onto the road and she just turns around and goes back to the house. |
