Default Seedy toe question?

Hi all. I know I am new but I have a situation. My 16 year old has (what I think) is seedy toe. I also have a 6 year old mare who is in foal that has the same thing one in front foot as well as her hind (both hoofs are white) it's a hole and it smells real bad. I cleaned them out I ordered boots for the mare cause she is also lame in the front from it. I did make a vet appointment for monday..My farrier is just out of school I guess he missed it. the last time he shod my mare she was dead lame and my gelding he just trimmed and he was real sore for about a week. (farriers are hard to come by where, I live, good ones anyway.) so my question is has anyone else ever delt with seedy toe and how did you treat it? what was the out come? anything I should do between now and monday? thank you in advance..

First of all you need to find another farrier !! Thats the best treatment for this problem !! Until you go to the vet, look at the sole of the hoof and see if the hole has went through to the bottom of the hoof !! If so clean it out as much as you can !! Then either soak the hoof in a 10% betadine/water (or a little stronger ) solution or better yet get a squirt bottle and fill it with the solution and literally force it into the hole from the top and bottom !! This needs to be done twice daily !! Betadine kills the bacteria/fungus that causes seedy toe !! The hole will just have to grow out and be trimmed off eventually !! Your vet may have you pack the hole !! If you have a medicine boot that would help to keep dirt out till the hole closes !! You can also put the medicine in it and let him wear it !! The main thing is to keep the hooves trimmed properly every 6 to eight weeks, apply the betadine 2x daily, and use your hoof pick before applying the betadine !! This can do damage to the hoof wall so it needs to be taken care of as soon as possible !!
