Default Horse with sore frogs

My mare just had her hooves trimmed and its been about 3 months and her frogs are now sore from walking on them. What can I do to take some of the pressure and pain off of them and still keep her calm and comfortable?

He should have trimmed the frogs if they were overgrown !! Hooves trimmed but not the frogs will allow the frog to extend past the hoof wall and become sore !! Trimming hooves too short does the same thing if the frog is normal !! Does she have thrush ?? Is there an odor to the hoof ?? Thrush might be another possibility for soreness !!

no no everything is fine with her hoof. She's just sore. Her hooves got too long and she wasn't walking her frogs but on her hooves. we didn't have the money until now to get them trimmed. They are sore from standing on them since she hasn't in a while. My friends horse did the same a few months back.

When the ferrier took shoes off a horse here he suggested we use terpintine on a rag applied to the frog to ease the soreness. Maybe it will help your horse too.

Oh !!! That sometimes happens with hooves that grow too long !! You can just give her some bute for a couple of days or you can do some warm water soaks with epsom salts !! But thats a lot of trouble !! Or you can just wait to ride her for about a week or so and give them time to toughen up a little !! Or if you have an area that holds a little water big enough for her to stand in you can also let her stand in the cool mud for about 30 minutes a day !! Its like a mud pack and that will help take some of the soreness out !! I even added some epsom salts to the mud once !!! Time is just the best thing though !!

Wait a minute !!! You say its been three months since she was trimmed ??? If so, thats not whats causing the soreness !! She would have grown out plenty in that time !! If a horse is going to be sore from a trim it will be immediately after and usually only lasts about a week !! Look for another reason !!!

The idea about the mud hole is worth a try I think. Or even a sand arena for part of the day. Good luck, keep us posted

I think the little goof is faking. >w< because today I took her out to stand in the mud like you guys suggested and she saw nice green grass and took off toward it instead of the mud. No problem walking around in the grass eating and then when i went to take her back in. She started acting like they were sore again

Ya know it does sound like a little discomfort maybe cause of the hoof trim. I'd wait a week or so and see what happens.

I thought she was saying that she had them trimmed three months ago !! Guess I read it wrong !!! In that case she should be fine in a week or so !! Just keep her off hard surfaces or gravel for a while !!
