COPD is not a definative disease on its own but rather a catchall for most types of lung or breathing disorders in horses just like people !! It can be caused by a variety of things most of which are difficult to diagnose without extensive testing !! What is the history on the horse and the age ?? I am going to assume that you have him outside in the fresh air as dust and dirt can aggravate COPD greatly !! Many horses with this have occassional flair ups and are back to normal in a few days if given steroid shots short term !! Usually COPD can be controlled if care is taken with such as hay, wetting it down so it does not generate dust, keeping the horse in a clean environment like a good grassy pasture, and then treating the occassional flair ups as your vet recommends !! Many horses with this can be used normally as long as you are not running races, but I have heard of some that compete on horses with COPD and just deal with the flair ups as they occur !! If this were my horse one thing I would check for, and most people do not think about, is insulin level !! Reason I say that is that I am a diabetic and take insulin, and when my blood sugar is high, I collect fluid around the lungs !! It usually doesn`t last long, just take additional insulin and get it down and it goes away !! I see no reason a horse couldn`t be the same way !! You might look at what you feed this horse and get it a feed with less sugar/carbs and see if that makes a difference !!

He is 8 yrs old in good health other than this. He was on dexamethasone sp? for 10 days I bought an ester-c and he gets that 2 x's a day. Fortunatly my hay is not dusty but I have been wetting it It will be freezing her real soon so that will be imposible. the horses are out 24\7 with a very large run in no straw. Some of the problem I think was the dry year. most of our land it dirt. and I live on adirt road that boarders the pasture. I had to get after the county to treat the road. My vet suggested I get real heavy mollassas grain but neither one of us like it. It freezes together and way to much sugar for my feeding taste I just got corn oil to put in grain to keep dust down in that.

Ran out or room....I even dilute the ester-c with water. He still coughs when excercised, not to bad but I stop him until he's done. I am worried about taking him off the farm trail riding. Thanks for the blood sugar idea I will talk to the vet.

My horse was diagnosed with COPD once. I started feeding flaxseed, a cup per day, got rid of the round bales, keep the barn isle misted. It went away or whatever triggered ti has gone away. What seemed to cause it was the fact that he, my horse, was sticking his head down in the round bale and sniffing up the fines of the hay. My vet told me to change his environment and if I didn't don't come crying to him if he didn't get better. So far so good and he still gets the flax seed every day.
I was also told there was an inhaler for horses with COPD but it would have to be used for the rest of his life and it was expensive.
Good luck, hope it all gets better.

Yes it did help he was coughing contsantly before, like woke me up in the middle of the night coughing. But it is steroid and not good for him long term and this is the second time this summer he was treated. My vet says every 90 days is still pushing it, but acceptable. We are going into winter so he thinks his symptoms will be better. Ester-c was one of the only supplements I could find for copd. He has only been on that for a week and a half, so I don't know if it's helping or if it's just coincedental. Is flax seed a oil? I've heard of it but never seen it. Where do you get it? thanks for all the help guys

I have no problems with any of my horses so I have never used the flaxseed !! I believe it is an oil and most all larger feed dealers will have it !! Check with Tractor Supply !! Its worth a try I guess !! Can`t hurt !!
Yes I know that it is a steroid and I know its limitations !! I was just curious if it helped when given to the horse !!
