Default kids will be kids

When I was around 5 yrs old, my older sisters, 12 and 13 yrs, used to want to show and we could not afford such a luxury and we did not live close to a populas that had shows.

We owned no saddles, just halters and bridles with a bit.

The girls decided that they should go ahead and teach our ponies to jump......well, they didn't start out small mind you, as they had no idea what they were doing.

They started with a 50 gallon metal burn [trash] barrel on it's side. They would take a run at the barrel and at first both the ponies they were 'training' swerved to the side. They would bring them back, sniff the barrel, then go back to the starting point and make a run at it again. Finally the ponies started jumping the barrel.

During that week, the girls decided they should jump many things, as they felt their ponies were doing good and were now more willing.

They started jumping Cattle Guards!

To think of the ramifications now if the ponies had missed, horrifies me!

They also talked me into getting on double and jumping with them-which I did because I trusted them to not get me hurt. I sure was in the dark on that one!

They went on to jumping fallen oak trees, little creeks-[shame on that one] and anything else they believed they could clear.

God Truely protects the innocent!

I have many more stories to tell if you guys like to read them.

P.C. Thanks. It's funny cause I am talking about the 60's...which now seem so very long ago. I think kids are way more 'watched over' now.

We evidently had the 'survival of the fittest' rule back then. If you weren't tough [being smart had nothing to do with it] you would not survive.

HA! That sounds familiar, I'm 16 and the other day I was out messing with my horse. I had to have my dad help me up on him bareback. Well, this goofy little horse can't see. My little cousin Kali wanted to ride him, so I'm like, sure, why not? Meanwhile I had just put me Addidas "flip-flop" type shoes on. THEN I figured out why in the heck you don't wear sandals while you're messing with horses. He stpped just on the side of mine and it bruised it, no breakages [thank gosh!] but a nasty bruise and a little soreness. But yeah, I get what you mean .. hehe the stupid things we do as kids/teenagers. XD
