The 7 of us went from mid state California to Oklahoma. It was a 'Dandy' road trip-I was 6 yrs old. We met my Dad's Brother and his wife----kid you not-redneck we are---Uncle Jessie and Aunt Johnnie!!!!! NOT KIDDING: Aunt Johnnie had a GLASS EYE!!!!! Anyway- we show up on this huge friggen ranch that Uncle Jessie is managing...My older sisters asked about some horses that were out on a 'billgillion' acre pasture-wanting to know if we could ride them. We were told-NO-these were Ranch Horses and that they were too hard for us to ride and we were to stay away from them. Well, my older sister-about 14 yrs old-[8 yrs older than me]-decided she would take us kids and go check out these horses while Uncle Jessie and my Dad are out working on the ranch. Mom and Aunt Johnnie went several miles into the nearest town to grocery shop. Well, being that I was 2nd to youngest-one younger brother, we tagged along with my 2 older sisters and older brother [goody 2 shoe] First time I ever saw Hay twine-we only knew bailing wire. Well, twine in hand, my sisters caught up two horses, a mid size horse/pony, and we took off for the day with bailing twine as bridles. All day we rode the ranch which had a huge canyon/creek bed. Came back to the house late in the afternoon smelling like sweat and horses-horse hair on our trouser butts-not one adult asked where we had been for 8 hours! Twas the life! |

Great, great story, Westmar. I have been busy with foals, two were born last week, one Memorial Day, the other early Sat. a.m. One was two weeks early and quite a surprise. One is under meet my horse, the other under Foals. Yesterday one of the new moms got sick and had to have the vet out. He flushed her out really good and luckily could not find anything wrong. She seems to being okay today. Now after sleeping in the barn for a week, just maybe I can get some sleep.
