My barrel horse has a spaz attack when it comes to plastic bags and no matter how many times I desensitize him the next day it's like he's never seen one before. All my other horses are over being spooky of it in one session so maybe your horse is just an exception too.
Have you thought about how you approach the horse with the sack? If the first time you walked up to her with the sack and immediately started letting it whip around or you waved it at her she may just think you wanted her to move away. Now she sees it and is doing what she thinks she's suppose to do-run. You should make the bag small (I'm talking like a walmart plastic bag) and wad it up in your hand so that its not so scary looking. Just hold it out to her and let her sniff it and once she licks her lips and relaxes let the tuff of plastic touch her. Don't ever start with the head first unless she voluntarily touches it. Shoulder or her withers are safe places because its not a vital spot where they'd be attacked. Just move on from there letting the plastic get bigger and bigger as you rub her down with it. You can also tie bags near her feeder, where the water is and to the fence where she is kept so that pretty soon they are as normal to her as a tree. Big trash bags speed the process up if you are going to do the hanging thing but if she's that spooky then i'd start small with approaching her. |

Mmmm, I have a paso fino/quarter horse 2 year old colt that charges me just like that when I lunge him. What I do is when I know he is going to do it I flip the lungeline then tap him in the shoulder with the whip, sometimes the taps can get to looking a little hurtful but a horse skin is tough. He backs off then but I never retreat when he is charging. Only makes it worse, he will know if he charges I will back off and it needs to be the other way around. If she charges you then its plain and simple its lack of respect. Yes when I horse charges its a stand off to see whos gonna bend and and be the chicken. haha.
as for spooking just work slowly everyday and always leave the round pen relaxed and on a positive outcome. Good luck! |
