Default Breeding the older mare

Can anyone tell me how old you have bred your mares? Can a mare in her twenties still produce a live foal? Could I hurt this mare's health if I breed her and she settles? I'm sure most people wouldn't consider breeding a mare in her twenties , but I'd like to try. Please give me you in put on this Thank-you.

I have one that was bred before I got her at 20 on the nose, and I've seen plenty of older mares carry fine well into thier 20's. But most of those were brood mares, and had been bred many times before that. I would suggest a vet check for reproductive health. I personally would not breed a maiden mare that old, but a proven broody, that may be a different story. Good luck with your decision.

Hey Nightrider !! How are you ?? Like Candice said as long as she has had foals before and is in good health I see no reason why she can`t have another one !! Many breeders use mares well into their twenties !! I would as Candice suggested, get her vet checked before breeding her !!

We bred a 26 year old mare this year. It has been 3 years since she had her last filly. She has had many and never had any problems. She looks better than some of our younger mares that were bred around the same time. We are just keeping a close eye on her for the winter and if she looks like she is loosing weight or anything, we will bring her up and put her seperate to feed her but so far she is doing great.

I have three mares in their 20's that are still breeding. I just get them vet checked each year to make sure they are still reproductively sound. It isn't a problem for most mares to have foals in their 20s. Good Luck!!

Hi Mart, I'm well, thank-you! just been busy. Thank-you to all of you for the great advice. She has had foals in the past. She's a very nice mare and tall. I think I will try breeding her. If she doesn't settle I at least tried.

Thanks Mart. We have been so busy, have to put in hay here because they can't eat snow! Ha! We filled two barns this year. Yes, Winchester. I do have him, he's a great trail horse. We know who the breeders are, where he came from. etc. and he is now registered as a pinto. I have 6 horses. This 23 year old quarter horse was given to me because the owner couldn't afford to feed her anymore. She is in very good shape, so at least they did good by her. I hope to be on line more now that the colder weather is here.
