Default Mare Birth Control

There is a birth control for mares. The Vet can insert a 'marble' size 'ball'? into the uterus, which tricks the mares brain into thinking she is pregnant.
Problem is that the technology is still a few years young and the proceedure needs to be repeated each year as the mares uterus will reject that object. I heard it costs about $800.00 per procedure up here [Montana]. Kinda tough to make the decision on birth control or spaying the mare.
This day and age the mare needs to be exceptionally bred, in her right mind, have correct conformation, in order to keep her as a broodmare...I guess as it should be.

Use of a Glass Ball to Suppress Behavioral Estrus in Mares

Good read, although it suggest that it is only effective in about 40% of mares. This was a study of 12 mares and only 5 exhibited the desired result, study was by the College
of Veterinary Medicine, Auburn University.

$800.00 for a less than 50% chance?

LOL for 800.00 of unproven results I think the better idea is to keep the mare away from a stallion.

Yep for $800 I can keep the mare away from the stud or $100 and 5 minutes and you have a nice gelding.

It's not a procedure for responsible horse owners. there needs to be a cheaper method for the irresponsible. Something like a shot that could be given at the sale barn.
