Default Need Recommendation on Veterinary Book

Hi! I'm going to be getting my horses in a few days and I don't have any kind of Veterinary book. I looked on the internet and there are so many and of course I can't look at them to see what looks best. I need a good one because there is only one large animal vet in 2 counties. Help would not be quick and it would be expensive. The old goat charges $1.50 per mile, round trip plus everything else. I want to be able to treat them when possible and know when to call the vet. So experienced horse owners, what book is your favorite? Would you recommend it to me?

I like anything by Cherry Hill.
As far as medical info, try checking out the AAEP website for various articles and information.

Okay, I found the other book that I like, it's called Horse Owners Veterinary Handbook. You can find it on amazon. http://www.amazon.com/Owners-Veterin.../dp/0876056060

I like the book "How To Think Like a Horse" by Cherry Hill. It's not a veterinary handbook but it'll help you out when trying to figure out why your horse is acting one way or another. I read it all in about two days. I'm big on that. I don't have a veterinary handbook, unfortunately, but I have neighbors that have pretty much been through it all and are willing to help me out [ thank gosh ].

I got a book on Lameness that I have really relied on when I had a rescue that was severly lame. It is called Lameness. Equine research by Chester King, MACVSc and Richard Mansmann, VMD, PhD. The Lyons Press printed it.

It covers recognizing and treating the most common horse Ailments. It is a great reference.

Nothing beats a friend that has owned horses for 30 or 40 years !! Get one !!! There are many things in a book that sound so similar that its best to ask someone that can take a look !!

I agree with you 100% Mart. There's nothing like experience. Ive got on uncle who lives close and he's 83 & spry. My other uncle raised and trained horses until he was 65, he's now about 70. He's my telephone help because he's out of state. I have a cousin that is 83 and still raises and shows TWHs. As you can see I have experienced help but I don't know how much longer they will be alive. So I need to find someone about my own age too. I can work on that. My grandad was quite a horseman, and a self made vet. He was a poor farmer in the Depression. There was no calling the vet. He also raised cattle, pigs, turkeys, chickens, and world champion English foxhounds. The whole refrigerator door was always full veterinary meds. I was a child in the 60's and I have a lot of memories of him looking in this big thick veterinary book. So I thought I need a book too! So I really appreciate the suggestions I have received so far. I'm going to get them all eventually. I thought experienced horse people were the ones to ask for suggestions.
Thanks again, everyone!

Remember you can always ask here as well !! I have had horses since I was 10 and I am 59 now and many others are very experienced as well !! If one of us hasn`t dealt with the problem then another one has !! Minor stuff you will learn to handle on your own after a while as we all have !! Just be patient and ask a lot of questions !! But most of all know what is normal for that particular horse !! They are not all the same !!
