Was the mare given a tetnus shot when she got hurt? I had a mare get hurt and we did not know it until she started staggering around like she was drunk, she then went blind. Just happened that I have a vet that had dealt with tetnus before and we managed to save her. Tetnus is not something that many vets have dealt with and some do not know what to look for with the symptoms.

No I wasn`t thinking that you intentionally hurt them !! I just wanted to get the horses straight and make sure I didn`t confuse the question with someone elses horse !! Someone else had a similar question recently !!

My mare started out like she was drunk, stumbling around when she walked. She went blind a few days later. Called the vet and he knew exactly what was wrong with her. We had to give her 35cc of penicillian a day for 14 days and then 2 tetnus shots and she got over it. Which the vet said that most of the time they don't make it but ever once in awhile one will pull through.
I can't believe the vet didn't give her a tetnus shot. The only reason my mare didn't get one was that the cut was under her tail where we couldn't see it until it was to late. Now if my horses get more than a scratch, I give them a tetnus shot. I don't ever want to go through that again. My mare still does not like me near her after all of the shots I gave her.

From what you have said about her I would almost bet that she had tetnus. It takes megadoses of penicillin, we gave 35cc a day all at one time for 14 days. My mare was stumbling around for a few days before she went blind. We kept her outside in a small pen. The vet did not want her in a stall. Said that she was better off outside by herself. She is fine now but it was a rough battle getting her through it.
There was a thread on here about her back under medical I think.
Wish I would have known all the signs she was showing before you put her down, maybe you could have saved her. My mare is perfectly fine now and you would never know that she was that sick.

Many vets make incorrect diagnosis if its something they are not familiar with !! Especially if they are mainly the dog and cat types and not an equine vet !! Always get a second opinion from a vet that deals with large animals !!
