Wink Rain rot

Well, I have been working on rain rot with one my horses for about 4 hours. First, put in stantion, horse down to soften scabs, then antibacterial bath(chilly today, not good), let it sit about 20/30 minutes while doing a million other things, then scrub with brush & nubbies to remove scabs, rinse well. She got a little chilled so worked her in the round pen to warm her up. That actually worked well. Air dried, put back in the stantion and curried off more scabs, poor thing it hurt, and then soaked with Listerine. Now air drying in a nice grassy area with no mud. Hard to come by right now. Will spray with Listerine for next few days, rubbing in well and that should take care of the problem. Only one more problem, more rain in forecast. Ugh!! Certainly glad I have tomorrow off to continue the treatment. Any other suggestions for rain rot other than expensive anti-bacterial spray would be appreciated. Have a great day. New filly doing great.

All I ever do is wash with betadine scrub , rinse and apply Furaseptin ointment or triple antibiotic ( Dollar Store) or just plain old medicated vaseline !! Also Dollar Store !! The ointment softens the scabs and each time you do the betadine scrub they just fall off !! Keeping the ointment on aids the healing and hair growth !! The betadine scrub can be diluted and just sprayed on the areas that get it as a preventative !! Listerine spray will work also but not as well as the betadine !!

I use apple cider vinegar and listerine too but for a real bad case I mix
betadine, peroxide and mineral oil. Daub on and leave overnight. The scabs just come off so easy. Be sure to discard scabs in a trash can. Then after getting all the scabs off, I use MTG. The best stuff and works great. It is sulfur based and worth the money. It promotes mane and tail growth also.

Be sure that what ever you use on the horse with rain rot that you do not use on any other horses until it is bleached or sanatized.
I noticed today that 2 of my colts are getting it, so I hope it warms up in a day or two so I can bath them.

Thumbs up Thank you!

Thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions. 4J-I have brushes and combs for each horse and never cross use them. Thanks for the reminder. I bleach all of my stuff two/three times a year, and wash even more. Again, everybody, THANK YOU!!!
