Default How do If my mini is pregnant

My minature mare Mitzie is 22yrs old. She has been in with my red dun mini stud since last spring and I do not know if he bred her or not. Her teets were hanging lower then usual the other day but did not look as if they were getting any milk. She is 38" tall and always fat but she acts like she is always hungry these days. She eats more then her share of hay and gets a scoop of grain daily. I don't have the money to get her checked for being pregnant. I will check her bags again in the morning to see if there is any change. If she is in foal for this year I will hold off on selling her but she came into heat. Do some mares act in heat when closer to foaling?
Anything helpful will be appreciated

Default ?Prego?

Only on horseville would a horse owner not be able to tell if a mare is bred. But better yet put a stud and a mare of that age together and not expect it to happen. She's not to old to cycle but your pushing the age limits for safe foaling for her and the foal.

I know the breeding limits as I work for Spotted Hart Stables and my boss has bred mares as old as 25yrs old and has had no problems. My stud is only 9yrs old and 3" shorter then Mitzie. Mitzie is completely healthy so it should be no problem for to her foal at all. I have no plans ever of getting my mini stud gelded as he is quiet and gentle as is and I knew it might happen but not expect it as he would have a heck of a problem mounting her unless she was on lower ground then him but the pasture they are in is level. If she is pregnant for this year I will be keeping the foal but as I learned from other mini breeders and people that are experienced with them not to wean mini's until they are 6 months old as its better for mini's to be weaned at that age then 4 or 5 months old.

Not unusual for a mare to act in heat within the first 30 plus days of gestation when pregnant. They can still build a folical.
Not sure on the last trimester-but-anything is possible. See if she has a bit of milk.....

Has your mini ever had a baby before? Some minis have trouble foaling, keep a eye on her.If she is showing signs of being in heat,my gut feeling is she is not bred. But is she showing signs of being "in" or discomfort?Let us know if she has a baby.
