Default Diet

Well, my New Years resolution is a diet plan low in cholesterol --- since my dad passed away from a heart attack and stroke and my husband has high cholesterol --- one simple to stick to --- so I have been doing research on different things:

The greatest thing is --- there are meats high in protein and very low in cholesterol --- such as: Pheasant, duck, rabbit and fish --- I have plenty of fish in my lake.

Now has anyone ever ate pheasant or rabbit --- I had my own ducks processed and they are great --- but I have never tried the others. The main reason I am asking is --- I plan on raising my own --- since that is the cheapest way. I have my golden pheasants --- but I do not think they are big enough for processing --- so I am thinking if the meat is good --- I can purchase a pair from the guy down the road that I sold my ringnecks to.

So anyone that has tried either one please give your input --- also if there is a type of meat I am missing --- low in cholesterol --- let me know about that one also.

Your Goldens if up to standard are worth about $125 a piece here in Pa.
That is a very nice dinner.

As far as cooking, most of your game can be used.
I like duck in the oven stuffed with apricot jam-sorry not real healthy, but good.
Pheasant,Quail,Grouse,Frog legs and Rabbit, have a fairly mild flavor.
Deer is very low fat, so takes some practice to be able to cook it without drying out.
Bear and Snapping turtle, in my opinion have a strong after taste, use in a soup to dilute.
One of the best investments if you are looking for healthy- a good quality smoker, it's like having an outside crockpot and you will have less tendency to over season.
Alligator and most of your shellfish are Ok as well.

$125 --- I would have never imagined --- I will not be cooking them anyway --- I am getting ringneck for that --- I bought my golden at the auction for $25 a piece --- a male and female. Also you gave me some other ideas also --- thanks at least I know rabbit and pheasant are good and have a way to cook them.

Itc4h, I have eaten everything on your list except Grouse and Bear. I've never even thought about eating Bear and don't recognize Grouse.
Have you ever had moose? I did in Colorado and it wasn't good, to me anyway. It was prepared in a roast manner, could have been a smoker...

I've never eaten bear or grouse, but have eaten pheasant. It was a lot like turkey and was quite good. I, too, am on a diet and have cut out soft drinks and junk food. A good snack that I like is Chex Snack Mix (the traditional flavor). I've never had deer(venison) but my husband's step-father's family like to marinate the venison in apple cider. It sounded pretty good!

Grouse is like any other small bird really.
No Moose, they aren't real plentiful in Pa.
I guess you really can eat anything, not cheap but there is an exotic restuarant that we can only afford to go to maybe twice a year.
So far I've tried; Lion,Kanagroo,Rattlesnake,Puffer fish,Zebra,Ostrich and Elk these are farm raised by them except for the fish.

Thinking about food; Buffalo is another good meat, we can get that @ a local farm, really expensive @ $10-25 per pound.

Didn't realize bufflo was so high Someone tried to give us a buffalo and we said no. Now I'm thinking maybe we should of said yes. LOL
Itc4H, wow you have tried everything! I always wondered how Lion would taste.

As far as a diet, I started a plan a few months back. It's Healthy Exchanges Lifetime Plan. Or for short, HELP. It just exchanges bad food with healthy food, exercising everytime you are moving, like tightening the butt muscles when walking or holding your arms out to the side when walking etc...just healthy exchanges thru out a day.
What I have found really helps with mental positiveness is posture. It's amazing how much better you feel when you straighten up the back and hold belly muscles in when working working thru out the day. I do feel better these days
Good luck ya'll

Rabbits are very good,a friend of mine eats alots of rabbits. They bake it,and some times they make a stew with it.
Deer are good too. You can cook it just about any way, slow cooker, roast, fried, smoked in a smoker is very good.

Well, I hope my rabbits get here soon --- didn't realize there was so many ways to cook them. If I like it --- I guess I will be building them a pen and raising them also. I prefer the meat I raise over the store bought --- sure has a better taste and not full of steriods, dyes and who knows what else.

I found a bottle fed calf --- I am wondering --- how long is it before they can be taken off the bottle? I am thinking --- since he is almost 2 months old --- he could drink his milk out of a bucket --- but i would probably have to teach him to do that --- wouldn't I?
