Did anyone else hear about when the slaughter horses to use for zoo's. I think that is a wonderful idea and would save the zoo's alot. Well, hopefully they would not get charged through the nose. Still think great idea.

I think the only time you should slaughter a horse, is when its already dead! Not sure if that makes sense but that's how I feel about it. So, I'm not for it at all.

I am expecting 1 foal this year and keeping it until the day it dies.
Horse rescues need to get together and help each other out and have more fund raisers like yard and bake sales and give pony rides, clinics, and classes to teach beginner horse people how to care for their horses and how to handle horses that they think are too much for them to handle. I have seen lots of horses for sale cause a beginner horseperson bought it and then have to get their money back out of reselling it so they can purchase something that is already trained for beginner people.
Horse slaughter people should chose their horses more wisely instead of sending all the useable, young, well trained, or horses that are retrainable for a new life so that way people will not throw fits about it like me. There has been too many good horses sent to slaughter and some too many horses that have been rescued that have to be put down or die cause its too late.

Ok.. I have a statement to say about this.. I myself am a beginner and I was sucked into purchasing a horse that was not for a beginner. We went to a breeder ok.. and they had two horses to look at.. 2.. they also had others but only 2 that they would let us ride.. the others were either not trained.. or not suitable.. is what they said *rolls eyes* well the two that were broke were standing tied to the hitching post. One was soaking wet with sweat .. the other one was pretty bad.. every time dad would let him ride on a loose rein he threatened to take off.. ok.. now to horse number two.. sweaty horse.. I as a beginner and not very keen buyer did not know what to look for. I noticed when I rode him out by myself.. he seemed to be wanting to take off with me and they just passed it off.. saying .. oh he's just trying to get into his gait.. well.. we ended up going on a 1hr and a half trail ride.. he bolted across the creek.. and he said.. oh he'll be ok.. he just smelt something is all.. well.. we get the horse home.. and for a couple of months.. he's ok.. and then he starts getting progressively worse.. everytime I take him out.. by himself.. he bolts.. at everything.. with others he's fine.. but not alone and lately he's been biting me and been trying to kick me when I put the saddle on.. and when I called the previous owners.. when I had gotten thrown off and told them about it... they said.. oh you must have dug your heels in.. So.. trust me when I say this.. we people that are beginners do not choose these horses.. we get tricked into buying them because nobody else will.. they are.. as in his case .. ran into the ground be we came and was so tired didnt want to do anything.. wanted to make sure they made the sale with the child's horse.. we paid 3,500 hundred dollars for him.. and that horse is currently up for sale right now .. because I cant ride him... we dont choose these horses.. the owners see us coming and pawn them off on us.. soo.. next time I go looking.. Im going to make sure I am going to grill that person and if they say that he or she is kid gentle.. Im gonna say prove and put your child up there.. :P

Thumbs down

I am for horse slaughter if they strictly regulate what horses are being slaughtered. We do have horses that are dangerous and can't be ridden. Actually one of my friends got a beautiful paint mare and brought it home, but needless to say everytime you got on her, she was going to try to kill you. I mead EVERYTIME! Unfortunately, since noone wants a crazy horse, she is stuck in their pasture until they can figure out something to do with her. Now on the plus side, I do take in horses and rehabiltate them and rehome some, but I am choosy on the horse I rescue. I take in babies that no one wants and teach them all their ground work. Bella ( 8 mon old black/white filly) was half starved when I got her and had so many matts that she looked like a sheep dog. Now, she is the most beautiful black/white filly you ever saw. She still acts like a dog, always in your pocket. If I hadn't taken her in, she would be dead right now. She is going to be a good horse one day. As for adults, I don't take any that aren't broke. I took in a cremello gelding about 4 years ago when he was half starved, paid $400 for him. He is now my barrel horse and is team roping horse. I wouldn't take anything for him. There are horses out there worth saving so don't say all of them are bad just because they are not being taken care of. If you show them that you care they will do wonders for you. 1 out of 10 horses are bad, but do you send the 9 good horses to slaughter just because no one wants them? I am for slaughter, but like I said before they HAVE to be STRICTLY regulated.

No, Amy you don`t send the other nine to slaughter if you can help it !! But,,,there are so many right now that no one wants, not enough people that will take them and care for them that slaughter is a better solution than a slow lingering death from starvation and disease !! At least its over quicker !! It takes a horse a long time to starve to death !! Can you even imagine what they go through during that time ??? Anyone like kansasrunner that takes the option away from them, dying quickly or taking them months to die, is not a person that has the best interest of the horse in mind !! They are certainly not horse people !! No one here likes to see a good horse at a slaughter facility, but I would rather see one there than in a pasture looking like a walking skeleton !! And unfortunately thats what is happening !!

Red face

I know, that's what make me sooo mad. I have gotten sooo many horses that were almost dying of starvation and have turned out to be WONDERFUL horses. I just can't save them all. I wish I could. Then there are these people who breeding grade horses just to breed. I don't understand that because no one wants colts anymore. You can't give them away! That how I got the baby I have now. She was in a lot that had mud up to her knees and she was skin and bones with so much hair she looked like a sheep dog. I don't understand why those people keep breeding.

Well all of mine are grade horses and I have had two foals in the last 20 years !! But mine are not for sale, period !!! Problem is there are breeders ( if you want to call them that) that throw anything in with the mares and sell the foals for whatever they can get !! No better than puppy mills !! Most of my horses came from places that had not enough feed, and way too many horses !!

There is a gal on here that has too many horses, can't sell them , can't ride them and has spent at least 1500. on training one of them. Well the horse got hurt at the trainers and now she is going to use her for a brood mare. Like we need more back yard horses. Some folks just live in a dream world and not in the real world. It is a shame...
