Default starting a 2 yr old colt

hey yall,
im starting a 2 yr old stud colt. he is perch/spotted draft cross, and 16.3 hands. any advice? he does GREAT with being saddled. first time ver he didnt move at all. he takes a bit out of curiosity. this weekend im prob goin to put him in the roundpen for the first time, and over the nxt few weeks get him used to roundpenning/working with a saddle and bridle on (no reins attached). when he is completly comfortable and his ground manners improve well start under saddle. suggestions and advice r greatly appreciated! i kno yall have lots of experiance with this!!

Just remember if he doesn't do what you want to keep moving those feet. Sensitize and desenitize during each lesson and always end on a good note. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Sounds like you're doing well! It's good that he's curious, that will make teaching him easier because he'll be interested! I have a 6 yr. old QH mare that is not as curious as I would like her to be so she gets bored if I repeat something a LOT. But I just have to make sure I do a variety of stuff with her and then she's fine. :)

UPDATE!!! well...he figured out he was a stallion...jumped/broke the fence and mounted the QH mare in the nxt pasture!!! UGH!!! for right now i wont touch him because he is too unpredictable. i am not tht experiainced and i dont want to get hurt. nxt spring i will start our two fillies, but sport is alot to handle, and until someone esle, who is stronger and wont get pulled around as much, teaches him some manners im not gonna let my 100 lbs get dragged about by his 2300lbs!!

Sounds like either someone else needs to be teaching him some manners quickly or needs to be gelded now. You are smart to not mess with him since you are inexperienced or so small. He really should be gelded and soon. if someone doesn't teach him some manners soon he will really be out of control.

yes!! his owner is not sure yet if he will be gelded or not. she wants to use him a stud. with a chain over his nose he is MUCH better, but i stil dont want to do anything with him other than walking him out to his field in the morning! he gets impatient much quicker than he used too!!

He really needs to be gelded !!! He is a crossbreed and not in demand as they say for stud service !! Why take a cross when you can have a purebred for about same money !! If they want him broke let them do it !! Let them get dragged around a while !! Meanwhile you are responsible for damages he does should anyone push it !! Should he tear down someones fences while trying to get to a mare,, you are the one that will be paying for it, plus lost breeding if it was a registered mare that the owner was going to breed but now can`t because this horse already got to her !! And possibly medical as well !! I would send him home !! Fast !!!
