Instead of circles to start with, try sending her in either direction back and forth. Get her respecting cues on lead line, then moving her rear end to pressure, and then with the back and forth back and forth. Does she saddle at all?

You can also take the lead rope, hold it up as you walk on the other side behind the horse, then pull on the lead rope, where her head is tilted to the opposite side from you, as you do that, pull the lead like you are plow reining her, dont release pressure until she spins around the way you are asking her too. If she saddles then you can use the saddle horn the same way as above. This helps teach them to move when pressured and also aides in helping the horse to know what you are asking when it is time to ride. It is a good excercise for them. Then after a week or so start trying the circles again on a short lead. If not go back to square one.

Wow belle, what good advice. I've been wondering about that very same thing. I'm kind of starting from scratch and a round pen is not my priority to build. Thank you!

I learned all this by watching and talking with my trainer over the years. I am always asking questions and putting the info to use. I found out that this really work of course watching and doing Clinton Anderson stuff too.

I do not round pen at all !! Never could see the point of going in circles and mine ride great and rein well !! Much of what you need teach her can be done from her back and in my opinion,, works just as well if not a bit better !! The main thing is getting her to where she will ride with no problems !! For now, I would probably use driving lines and work her with them as well as sacking her out !! Get her used to all type on things !! The driving lines will get her to walking forward and backing up and if you let the off line come around behind her and pull her nose around a bit she will go in those circles if thats what you want !! I would get her in a corral if you have one but it isn`t absolutely necessary !! Have you tried a whip behind her to get her going forward on the line ?? Not to hit her but just touch her to encourage forward movement !!

Be careful about that with your son !! Many will just stand when someone gets on the first time !! Its when they start to move a little that problems happen !!
