Start him out trotting around the pattern !! When you get to each barrel make sure that his position is correct before making the turn !! You may have to stop him just before the barrel , you want him to think about that turn, but just take it slowly and build up to speed !! Change the pattern frequently !! If you usually go right first change and go left some or to the number 3 barrel !! This will keep him from anticipating the turn before you are ready and tipping the barrel !! There is really too much to tell all at one time !! Only practice about 30 to 45 minutes a day to start to prevent burnout !! Remember he will learn more when going at a slower speed !! And do a lot of stops and starts till he learns your cues !! A really good barrel horse needs only to feel your weight shift to know what to do !!

Are you lounging on just a lead rope? That's too short for lunging. Horses often kick up on lounge lines but your far enough away to not get kicked.
You do not want a horse running around at the end of a lead rope. How else will they figure out whether they are being led or lounged? Make sure the horse is really broke before starting barrel training. You want the flexing and moving off your leg. ABle to lope circles. Counter arc. Be able to put the horse where you want it to be. |
