Default Bad day!!!!!!!!!!

I think I would like to go to sleep now. After the fiasco with Red earlier today, my nerves and emotions are shot. Well, hubby comes in from doing chores and says, did you have the vet look at Cheerios? (the girls' bucket calf they showed in 4h this year) I say, no, why would I? Well, Cheerios has been sick since Saturday, I didn't know, I haven't been out there. Cheerios is down and does not want to get up. She is still eating, but she doesn't have the energy to get up. I gave her a mega dose of penicillian, we gave her some grain and a bottle, she's been weaned for a while now, but we thought is was worth a shot. She's bedded down with tons of straw and I have my warm comforter on her. As soon as the kids are in bed I'll be going out to give her a bottle of warm sugar water. We called the vet and he is 2 hours away at his son's basketball game. So, this is my crappy day. I need a drink!!!!! Say a little prayer for Cheerios. If she makes it thru the night, she'll be going to the vet first thing in the morning.

Well, she's still alive. She is still too weak to get up, but she is still eating good. We started her on some stronger antibiotics and calcium. I am making her a calf blanket, and we are fashioning up a way to get her on her feet for awhile. The vet is not very optomistic at this point, but he says the best thing we can do is pray for her at this point. So thanks to all of you who included Cheerios in your prayers, please continue to do so.

Nope, no scours or bloat. She had a bad naval infection when we got her. We treated her for that and she did great with it. That was back in april/may. The vet says maybe she has a compromised immune system, its possible she didn't get the colostrum from her mom that we thought she did. It has been in the low 40's with lots of rain and wind this week, so that may have been enough to push her over the edge, last week it was upper 70's to near 80. Who knows. Lots of prayers and hope at this point, I don't know what else to do.

Have you taken her temperature? Normal is 101 for beef cattle. 101.5 for dairy cattle.

Have you tried electrolytes? It is made in a tube usually where the horse products are at the feed store. Super easy to give and you know she has gotten it.

Gatorade works as well to boost her energy and help her feel a little better, but she would have to drink it.

Do you know what she has? Respitory? Could it be Pnuemonia?

Are you giving LA 200 or another teramyacin drug?

Next time something is sick, let your family know to Please tell you right away if they see something wrong so you can check it out. Say it with love.

Good luck and you're in my prayers.

Well, inspite of all our efforts, Cheerios passed away Friday morning. My poor kids are getting a crash course in mortality. My 3 yr old decided last night that when she gets old or sick, she will die too. Oh, the farm life lessons....
